If you are wondering about how to open a WELL account here is the short story:
You open a WELL account by logging into our computer and going through the on-line registration program. The WELL costs $15/month plus $2/hour plus any long-distance costs. You can reach us through the Internet without any long-distance charges by using rlogin or telnet to us at: well.sf.ca.us or 192.132.30.2
You can also dial direct to us at 415-332-6106 Or you can reach us through CPN: Inside the 48 contiguous US states you can call 1-800-848-8980 to find out the nearest CPN number, then call that number with your computer and enter WELL at the Host Name: prompt.

The IDS World Network is an Online Information Service which provides access to the Internet, the worlds largest network of directly linked computers.
Online we feature many services; in addition to the standard TELNET, FTP, MAIL, FINGER, TALK, etc, users are also given a workspace area to allow file transfer capability, including ZMODEM and XMODEM and other modem transfer protocols to allow users to download files to their local machines.
Special databases and popular Internet resources are made available to the user through menu driven interfaces, providing ease-of-use for the less experienced user. Resources are broken down by category and placed on separate menus. Some of the Internet resources found in the menus include the Library of Congress Card Catalogs, NASA SpaceLink, Wide Area
Information Servers, Weather Service, the latest Earthquake Data, HAM Callsign Lookup Database, Geographic Information Server, and other useful databases.
The IDS World Network also provides access to services such as CompuServe Information Service, Dow Jones News Retreival Service, and DELPHI online information service.
IDS carries the RIME/PC-Relay group of BBS oriented conferences which include topics ranging from Vacataions to Guns, Novell Networks to Unix.We currently carry 60 RIME Conferences. We also have Usenet NEWS online.
Users connecting to IDS can chat with users from all around the world in our global "CB Simulator". IDS hosts weekly CB Conferences as well as daily "impromptu" group chats.
IDS Welcomes users telnetting IN from the Internet as well as dialup users. Internet users are invited to participate in our online forums and other features. Inbound users can reach IDS by telnetting to "ids.net" [155.212.1.2]
The use of IDS's local and RIME message areas is free, as well as the CB Simulator and file transfers with a 1:1 file transfer ratio. However, allother functions require a sponsorship of IDS. Sponsorship rates are listed below:

Serial Line Internet Protocol(SLIP) is a method that can be utilized

PERSONAL DIALUP ACCOUNT WITH SHELL
Personal accounts are available for engineers, researchers, students, and others. Many people have access to Unix accounts at their place of employment or school. A personal account at Netcom will provide a private and reliable home base for E-Mail, storage of source code and other personal data. ACCOUNT REGISTRATION
There are several ways to establish your connection. If you are
considering an Internet connection or a News/Mail feed, please contact one of our account representatives by phone. Your representative will be happy to discuss connection alternatives, equipment lease or purchases and network planning.
If you are considering a personal account, you can register over the
voice line or via the guest account. The guest account will not allow shell access, however, it will provide you with a menu driven environment that will allow you to register online. Personal accounts can be activated within 4 business hours if they are prepaid with VISA or MASTERCARD.
To access the guest account, make sure that your communication settings are 8-1-N and use VT100 for a terminal emulator. After you connect, log in as "guest". Remember, you must use lower case letters and you will not be asked for a password. You can also log in via telnet by using netcom.netcom.com or an IP address of 192.100.81.100.
